Actual correspondence between Thaddeus McFargle, a concessioner in the mining territory that would become Joplin Missouri, to his lady Delores back in Brooklyn.
We learn the tale of how Thaddeus ended up in the Joplin area the year before it became a city, resourcefully developed a concessions empire, and thwarted the efforts of a rival suitor- the devious croquet tutor Regibald Smith.
